This house design emerged from a strong collaborative effort between myself and the owners, who were very clear about their design for a home where the colors and textures came from natural materials, rather than paints and applied surfacing, such as plastic laminates. The style of the turn-of-the-century Scottish country architect Charles Rennie McKintosh struck me as an excellent reference for the home we wanted to design, and I tried to include some of the design elements found in some of his masterpieces, such as the Hill House.Architect Charles Michal
Inspired by the works of Charles Rennie Mackintosh, this custom home’s design details include the steep sheltering roof forms (some close enough to the ground to touch), the mixture of large and small windows and the detailing on the exposed wood beams. Ideas for specific elements within the design, such as the wrought iron railings, the tiled kitchen without overhead cabinets, the window seats and dining area window boxes, were selected from source books on French and English country homes, as well as other sources.
