The community of Plainfield has long outgrown their current 1920's library by threefold. This preliminary design works to complement the brick Colonial Revival building, and retain it's historical character through a sensitivity to scale, proportion, detailing and placement on the site. The addition was located in such a way that only a small portion of the adjacent land had to be purchased, rather than purchasing the entire site and relocating the house and barn situated there.

The old reading room, now overcrowded with stacks, with its fireplace hidden by casework was reclaimed to become the Maxwell Parrish Reading Room.
